Turkish Title: Kurban - Kazanılan Kayıp Yıllar
Translation of Title: Sacrifice - Reclaiming the Lost Years
Author: M. Ali Şimşek
This is the story of a normal middle-class Turkish family, and the events that overtake them at the start of a new academic year, as Kurban Bayramı (the Sacrifice holiday) is drawing near.
Kaya, the father, is a civil servant, with left-wing leanings. Oya, the mother is an elementary school teacher. There are two children in the family: one at university (Bora) and one at high school (Derya). When faced with the injustices of life in modern-day Turkey, good news is rare. When it does come, it surprises them all.
"As soon as Kaya awoke he drew back the thick dark brown curtains in his bedroom, as was his habit. As he did so he screwed up his eyes at the bright light that streamed in, then he rubbed them with the palms of his hand. Everywhere was covered, as if with a white blanket, by the snow that had fallen throughout the night. The chimneys were almost buried in the snow.
"The ground which had been marked with red stains from the blood of the animals that had been sacrificed some time ago now had been turned into a mound of snow; small shoots of leaves poked their heads out from the snow as if they had pierced the layer of snow. The suns rays which beamed out of a clear blue sky and bounced off the snow's surface in a million directions created a sparkling light show on the windows of the surrounding buildings."
